35 inconsapevolezze by Valentino Giacomin

THE QUESTION

Student’s question: “Could you explain why the Yogis say that we are not conscious and do not have awareness?”

The teacher explained: “We are not aware (conscious) of a number of things.”

1. We are like child. We are unaware of the external world. (What is happening around us: sounds, noises, people, animals, things…)

1.Noi siamo come bambini, inconsapevoli del mondo esterno. (Che cosa succede intorno a noi: suoni, rumori, gente, animali, cose…).

2. We are unaware of our body and its action. (How is now my body now? Where is it? Which actions am I doing with it? I am sitting, I am standing, I am walking… I am breathing… I am here, in the class, sitting near…, in front of…, behind…)

Are our thoughts like this heavy load in our head? Do we know what they are? From where do they come? Where do they go?
Dove vanno?

3. We are unaware of our mind, thoughts and emotions. (Do I know that I have a mind? Where is my mind? Do I know that I am thinking? Do I know that I have thoughts? Do I know what mind is? Do I know what a thought is? Do I know where the thought comes from? Do I know where the thought goes when it disappears? Do I know what the thought is made of? Do I know if the thought is real or not? Do I know what the emotions are? Do I know where they are? Do I know where they come from and where they go? How do I feel now? Why, sometimes, I feel good and other times I feel uncomfortable? What is the difference between the emotion of anger and the emotion of love? Do I know how to deal with my emotions when I do not like them? Do I know which emotions can make me happy or unhappy?

(So che cosa ho in mente? Dov’è la mente? So che sto pensando? So che ho i pensieri? So cos’è la mente? So cos’è un pensiero? So se il pensiero è reale oppure no? So che cosa sono le emozioni? So dove sono? So da dove vengono e dove vanno? Come mi sento ora? Perché, a volte, mi sento bene e altre no? So quali emozioni possono rendermi felice o quali infelice?

What is the difference between an emotion of anger and an emotion of love?

4. We are unaware how external reality exists. (Do we know how the external reality exists? Do we have a scientific proof that there is a world beyond your mind as we think it is? Do we know how the external world is like? How much do we know about the external world? Do we perceive the external world in the same way as other people do? Do we think that a dog, a butterfly, a rat, a mosquito… perceive the external reality as we perceive it? How is it that the dog, for instance, can hear sounds and smell odours that we cannot hear and smell? Do we think that a demon, a ghost, an animal, a Deva (god) does perceive the world as we perceive it? Who is right? Who is wrong? Who has the right perception and knowledge of the external world?
What about the enemy’s mother: does she perceive her son or daughter as the enemy (as we perceive him/her)?

If we see a person as a bad enemy, do we think that that person is really bad? Do we think that the badness is inside our enemy? What about the enemy’s mother: does she perceive her son or daughter as the enemy (as we perceive him/her)? Where is the goodness of a chocolate ice-cream? Is it inside the ice-cream? If it is inside the ice-cream, what about people who does not like chocolate?
Small kids believe that the goodness of a chocolate ice-cream is inside the ice-cream.

How is it that they cannot find the goodness inside the ice-cream? What about a terrorist? Do we think that someone is really a terrorist? If he/she is really a terrorist don’t you think that everybody should perceive him/her as such? How is it that a terrorist is considered a hero, a patriotic by his/her comrades? So, is there an objective terrorist or not? Where, actually, the terrorist or hero comes from? Where can we find them: in the external world or in our mind that is labelling someone as good, bad, hero, criminal, terrorist, friend, enemy… and so on? Do we know that our mind is not only creating the qualities of good and bad, enemy and friend…, but it is also “creating” the knowledge of the world?

5. We are unaware that everything we perceive is, actually, appearances in our mind. This is not what we usually think and believe. We believe that the tree, the mountains and the people we see are actually out there, outside, in the external world. How can we prove that what is appearing in our mind is, actually, the reflection of something that exists out there, beyond my mind? Is the reflection, the mental image real? Is the mental image same as the so called external object? Is the photo the same as the real object? Is there any real, external object? How can we prove it? If the object that we perceive is in our mind, is a product of the mind, how can we affirm the existence of something that is beyond our own perception and mind? How can we establish the existence of something which is no mind (like matter of the external word) with your mind? Because you think something, can you prove that the content of our thought is objective? In other words: can we find something beyond our thought which is not thought? What do we think of this statement: “For sure we know that in our mind thoughts, images, sounds, pleasant and unpleasant sensations and feeling about taste, smell, touch, sight appear…this is the only certainty that we have. Our world is nothing but a subjective perception, imagination and representation. Apart from all this, we do not know if something more exists. We can think, we can guess that something exists beyond our perception, but also this is a thought, a mental product of our mind!”

Our mind is painting the world according to its mood.

Come possiamo dimostrarlo?

6. We are unaware that the mind is creating our subjective world and is projecting it outside, in the so called “external reality”.

7. We are unaware that everything we see, we hear, we taste, we touch, we smell… comes from the mind and is projected in the external world. We can say that all we see, we taste, we hear, we touch, we smell is nothing but our projections.

8. We are unaware that we have a dominant thought that controls our mind and conditions it, day and night: the I- thought.

I AM you
We can’t find peace in a selfish mind.

The picture above represents our selfish mind that is concerned only about herself, while others are almost non-existent. How can we be happy if we choose our finite, limited ego against the infinite others, in the endless Universe?

9. We are unaware that we believe something wrong about our I-thought. We believe that it is something real, concrete, independent from our mind, while IT IS NOT!

10. We are unaware that the I-thought is not something special, different from other thoughts. It is simply a thought as all other thoughts.

11. We are unaware that the I-thought has the same nature of other thoughts.

12. We are unaware that all thoughts come from the mind and they are not different from the mind. They are mind. (Like all the cups, pots, plate, vases made of clay, they are all clay, a part the different forms and names we give to them. Like the waves with different forms, shapes… are all water. Be careful, we are not saying that the mind is our thought, but, on the opposite, we say that the thoughts are mind. To make an example: I cannot say that a bunch of clay is a cup. But I can say that the cup is clay.)

13. We are unaware that the thought and images of me and the thought and images of others are not different, apart for forms and names. All are manifestations of the mind. So, why do we care about the thought of ourself more than the thought of others? Why do we like the mental images of friends and dislike the mental image of an enemy since we all have the same nature?

The lake, in order to clearly reflect the moon without distortions, has to be empty and without any pre-existing images. Only If there is not any moon on the water the lake can reflect the moon. The lake has to be empty and transparent for reflecting the phenomena.

14. We are unaware what mind is and what its nature is. So how can we know what our thoughts are? So, how can we trust our thoughts if we do not know what they really are?

The sea-gull can fly because the sky is empty. In the same way, thoughts could not arise and “fly” if our mind were not empty by its nature.

15. We are unaware that the mind must be free, empty of everything to allow everything to appear. If the mind is not free, empty, how can the different thoughts and images appear? If a bottle has not space, can it contain the wine, the water or any other liquid? The essence of the bottle is to be empty space. Because it is empty it can be filled with something. If the sky is not empty, can a bird fly? The clay has not a fixed form. If this were the case, then the clay could not be shaped as a cup, a plate, a pot, a vase… Because the clay is empty of any forms, any objects, it can express all the objects. Because the mirror is empty of colours, it can reflect all the colours.

16. We are unaware that the mind is empty, clear and knowing.

17. We are unaware that everything the mind

reflects cannot be found in the mind. Everything the mirror is reflecting cannot be found in the mirror. Everything appears as real, but cannot be found. All the appearances are like illusions, without consistency, without solidity.

18. We are unaware that thoughts and images cannot be found, if we look for them. They appear, but they are not real.

19. We are unaware that thoughts and images arise due to the play, the motion of the mind. (Like the waves on the ocean, or the vases, pots… from the clay).

20. We are unaware that the play of the mind is different for animals, humans beings, ghosts, demons, gods.

21. What do we know about the dance of our mind? We can compare the movement of the mind to the actress’s dance. According to the kind of dance, the actress creates special forms... But no one would think that those forms are real objects, animals or persons.

Illustration: the dance of Shiva. It represents the Mind that creates and destroys the world.

They are just illusions. The mind could be compared to the actress. Its movement creates special forms that we call thoughts, images. But, like the forms created by the actress, we cannot these mental creations. They appear, but they are not true.

22. We are unaware that each of us, the animals, other beings and creatures perceive the world in a different way (subjective way). This happens because the mind is playing or dancing in a different manner.

We are unaware that each of us, the animals, other beings and creatures perceive the world in a different way (subjective way). This happens because the mind is playing or dancing in a different manner.

23. We are unaware that the different play or dance of the mind depends on the karmic seeds we have accumulated, through our actions, in the past.

The fruits depend from the kind of seeds we have planted. The fruits of our actions are the present conditions of our life.

24. We are unaware that the karmic seeds (or mind imprints) are the cause of the dance of the mind that creates the world we are living in.

Just like a farmer sows seed in the ground to reap fruit later, we must sow seed in our hearts to reap good later.

Who turned the Eden into a Valley of tears? Certainly, it was not the Creator. As we read in the Bible, the Creator made things right "It was good." The transformation of the environment is related to the transformation of the mind of our ancestors. When they separated their mind from God (sin), immediately changed the perceptions and, therefore, changed the way of knowing and the relationship with themselves and the outside world. The disturbed mind of Adam and Eve produced an environment of conflicts, but there was not a new creation. God did not create a new the world after the disobedience of Adam and Eve. That divine world, peaceful, beyond the polarities and the conflict is still present, but we cannot “see" it because of our ignorance.

25. We are unaware that we can purify, eradicate the negative karmic seeds from our mind, so that the appearances cannot harm us or create suffering and transform this world of suffering into nirvana.

From Paradise to the Valley of tears ... From the "unaware" peace of the child in the mother’s womb, to the terror caused by the expulsion of the forced birth: a journey of self-realization to regain the peace of Eden consciously and definitively. The Child, to grow, to realize his life-project in a conscious way, must to get out of "blissful ignorance" and security of the mother’s womb. The desperate crying of the newborn is echoing the cry of our mythical ancestors. In other words, no one has driven the first parents from Paradise. They’ve been always there. Because they decided to know good and evil (dualism), they became victims of the projection of the dualistic mind and inner conflicts too. They became victims of a terrible delusion, which has turned paradise into a frightful nightmare. The moral: we must exit from the nightmare, from the sleep of ignorance and illusion to discover our true identity 'and see the face of God in every creature.

26. We are unaware that we can accumulate positive karmic seeds that counteract, contrast the negative ones, making them weak so that the dance of the mind becomes less chaotic and messy.

27. We are unaware that when the mind becomes less chaotic and messy its real nature can be manifested (like the water of a pond: when its movement decreases, then we can start seeing its transparency, clarity and purity). Only when the bottle is empty of its content we can see its transparency, luminosity and real essence.

How can we rediscover the Eden from which we have never strayed?
Ramana Maharshi says: "The only thing to do is bring the mind within" Only pacifying the mind we can discover the beauty of our inner paradise.
Lao Tzu wrote: "The whole Universe surrenders to a stable and peaceful mind."
Swami Vivekananda: "All the powers of the universe are already 'in our possession. It is we, unfortunately, put a hand over our eyes and cry because it's dark! "

28. We are not aware that we have to free the mind of all its illusory content (thoughts, images) in order to allow the mind itself to manifest its qualities of emptiness, purity, clarity, beauty, love, compassion, peacefulness (without discursive thoughts and conception) and the quality of knowing.

29. We are not aware that there is a method that allows to the purity of the mind to manifest itself: this is the meditation based on the teachings of a qualified Guru, followed by accumulation of merits, purification and positive actions.

30. We are not aware that meditation pacifies the dance of the mind, going beyond thoughts and images.

31. We are not aware that when the mind is silent (no sounds of thoughts) its real nature can be manifested and the image of God appears. (We can call it Buddha Mind, or God’s Mind, Atman, Soul, Primordial Mind, Clear Light, Pure Awareness...)

Silent Mind – Peaceful Mind. Silent Mind is the Mind beyond creation, beyond thoughts and memories. If we want the peace of Eden (the natural, primordial state of our mind), we have to be free from the Eden itself. This –probably - is the meaning of the myth of the “Lost Paradise” of our ancestors. Leave everything to get everything.

“If the mind is calm and pure, we can see the reflection of God’s face” – Anonymous Indian
32. We are not aware that our God’s Mind is always here. It is always with us and with the sentient beings and creatures of the Universe and with the entire Universe. All the Universe is manifestation of God’s Mind since the beginning of time. God’s Mind, or Clear Light Mind, or Pure Awareness Mind, or Atman Mind…is essentially emptiness, purity, clarity, beauty, love, compassion, peacefulness.. When these qualities manifest as images, then God appears, Buddha appears, or Christ appears, or Krishna appears… then you can see the reality beyond the conventional way of perceiving and knowing.

33. We are not aware that all of us are, actually, manifestation of our God. We cannot see this wonderful mind because we do not know all the previous points (due to ignorance), because we are following the appearances and thoughts created by the motion (the dance) of the mind.

The chaotic dance of the mind generates destructive emotions like cr

aving, desire, attachment, hate, pride… We are not aware that this is the origin of our suffering.

34. We are not aware that we cannot perceive ourselves as our God (Buddha, Jesus, Shiva...) the others as our God (or Jesus, Shiva...), the environment as the Pure Land of our God, because of the agitation of our mind which is under the influence of ignorance and negative emotions (hate, attachment, jealousy, pride). The agitation of the mind is like the choppy water of a pond. How does the moon appear in the choppy water of a pond? We cannot perceive the reflection of the moon, but thousands of reflections, that appear as thousands of phenomena. The moon is always there, but the movement of the water creates the illusion of thousand things. The same applies for our Pure Mind: it is always there. Our God is always here but His image is distorted by our chaotic mind so that instead of Buddha (or Jesus, Shiva...) we perceive thousands of phenomena: the mountains, I and you, enemies and friends, animals and so on.

The agitation of the mind is like the choppy water of a pond.

The beauty of our mind emerges when the disturbing thoughts cease.

35. We are not aware that if we calm the choppy mind, our God appears with his qualities of love, compassion, peacefulness and wisdom. Only our God will be there. And we will realize that all phenomena (samsara) created by the restless mind were nothing but illusions, like the reflections on the water, or in the mirror.

Conclusion
While meditating or while doing your daily activities, always keep in your mind the awareness that your real mind is the Divine Mind. Be aware that there is nothing but our God’s Mind that knows, is pure, clear and peaceful. If a thought arises, just recognize it as manifestation of your God’s Mind. If an enemy appears in your mind (or projected outside), recognize him or her as manifestation of your God’s Mind. In other words, see your God everywhere, because everything is your God, given that everything is created by your Deep mind (or Luminous Mind). If an emotion of anger arises, just look at it and be aware that it is the manifestation of love and compassion of God’s Mind. Then the qualities of God’s Mind can arise. Where there is hate you can perceive love. Where there is revenge you will perceive forgiveness. Where there is desperation you can transform it into happiness. Do not identify yourself with the appearances of your choppy mind (thoughts, images) because they are not real, they are only the product of the motion or dance of your restless mind. If you identify yourself with the appearances, you are condemned (by yourself!) to suffer, because you will miss your real identity, that is beyond the appearances and illusions.

Conclusione
Dove c’è odio potrete percepire amore. Dove c’è sete di vendetta potrete percepire perdono. Dove c’è disperazione potrete trasformarla in felicità.

Beyond the thousands sparks of luminous forms appearing in the choppy water of the pound there is the moon! When the water becomes still, the moon “surfaces”. When the mind ceases to be restless, the destructive emotions also cease. That’s the time when our God appears.
